Impact Electrons Siam has been assisting Impact Energy Asia Development Limited ("IEAD") with the development of the 600MW Monsoon Wind Power Project in Southern Laos, ASEAN’s flagship wind power plant. The estimated cost of the project is between $0.9 to 1.0 billion. The project is targeted to reach commercial operations by 2023. With the capacity of 600 MW, the project is recognized as the largest wind farm in ASEAN and could offset over 35 million tons of CO2 throughout its lifetime.
The project is strategically located on a 1,100 to 1,500 meter elevation plateau in Southern Laos, along the main highway connecting Ubon Ratchatani, Thailand to Danang, Vietnam. The area is one of the region’s least developed locations and is between Thailand, Laos, Vietnam and Cambodia. The Monsoon Wind Power Project will provide a multitude of opportunities for the region’s local community economically through job creation and environmentally through clean energy.
The project will also complement Laos’ alternate source of energy generation: hydropower. Laos hydropower sector makes up a massive portion of its economy, however, hydropower is generated mainly during wet season. By building a wind farm, the country will have a more stable electricity flow throughout the year as wind turbines generate the highest amount of electricity during dry season. Wind energy, when combined with hydropower, allows for Laos to distribute renewable energy to other ASEAN nations evenly throughout the year at a competitive price as well as fulfill Laos’ objective of being the “Battery of Asia”.
